Seatmaking - Pg. 3

The last part needing shaping is the front of the seat or "pommel." This is also done by drawknife and spokeshave.

This is a very cool tool called a pommel knife. It has a knife edge so it can be used in either direction and one straight handle to keep it out of the way. Very slick and effective.

After the knife I start shaping the two sides using the extra large blade first. Besides the knots there are a lot of tricky changes in grain direction.

I move to the standard size, using the regular and radius stocks dependent on the work.

The razor edged blades can be set for very fine cuts.

This is my favorite spokeshave. It is made like a "cigar" shave from boxwood. I can get into some very tight radii with this.

The compliment in a regular style shave is great at cleaning up small areas
